A wedding in Bamako

Last Sunday we were invited to the wedding of Rebecca's African dance teacher, Shaka.  The celebration was held on the street in their neighborhood underneath a canopy structure.  This seems typical for celebrations in Mali.  We arrived around noon and shared a typical Malian meal of rice with meat and vegetables with the other guests.  The men then left and sat nearby under a tree while the women and children began celebrating in earnest.  About an hour into the celebration Shaka and his bride, pictured below, stopped by to say hello.  It was a fun and interesting afternoon.  We left at about 3:30 and the celebration was still in full swing.  Be sure to check out the video at the bottom of this post

  1. Is Rebecca one of the women dancing in the video? There are 2 women that look like they could be her, but you mostly just have the back of their heads. Did you dance?

  2. Hi Chris,

Thanks for the comment! Yes. Rebecca is one of the women dancing in the video and you can see her face. I danced -- to the great pleasure of those attending. Fortunately it was not for long and there does not appear to be any documentation.

  3. Ah, I watched again and now I can tell which one she is. Guess I wasn't paying close enough attention the first time--was too busy looking at all of the colorful clothes and the drummers. Looks so interesting!
We missed you this weekend. It's Fleet week and totally beautiful weather.
Hope you guys are doing well. And next time, make sure someone takes a video of you dancing!
